Introduction by Cameron Doan, PGA Head Golf Professional, Preston Trail Golf Club, Dallas, TX

Golf is a very difficult game, one that can be enjoyed at many different levels of ability, and one that offers many different avenues for improvement.

Golfers can improve by using information about how to swing the club from various sources including PGA professionals, instructional books and magazines, instructional videos, interactive software, and instructional television programs.

They can improve through changing and upgrading their equipment by being properly fit for a set of irons, buying a new driver with the latest distance technology, changing to a golf ball that better suits their game, or buying a new wedge or putter to shave strokes around the green.

They can improve the overall condition of their body through a golf-specific fitness program designed to strengthen the correct parts of their body, improve their balance and coordination, and increase their flexibility, thus enabling them to swing the club properly and with greater speed.

They can learn to think and manage their way around a golf course through a PGA professional or a book or video.

I believe as a PGA professional it is my job to guide the golfer through one or more of these avenues, based on what their goals are for their own golf game. Golf is a very individual game, one that can be played for leisure, competition, or to make a living. The golfer’s goals will help dictate which of these areas need to be addressed.

I firmly believe two of the pieces that should be part of your puzzle are golf specific fitness and video training.

  1. Golf-specific fitness deals with the athletic motion necessary for any productive golf swing. Whether the golfer is a tour player or a once-a-week social player, golf-specific fitness has absolutely no down side.

  2. Video training provides a medium for the golfer to see and understand what is actually happening in his or her own golf swing, and, through drills and practice reinforced by visual feedback, allows for long-term improvement.

I regularly work out under the guidance of a professional trainer and I use cSwing for both my students’ games as well as my own.

Rich Beem, the 2002 PGA Champion, has used every one of these avenues to become one of the best players in the world. He began this process in 1997, and the payoff for his years of hard work were seen as he won the International and PGA Championship in August 2002.
